Trade Access Partners

Sector focus: material handling

UK market entry for material handling manufacturers

UK forklift imports have risen every year since 2022 and orders are forecast to keep climbing. The usual way in is one exclusive national distributor: Trade Access Partners is the base that lets you skip that queue and keep your brand.

The market

The UK material handling market in numbers

A rising import line, a new name in the top five and a recovery already on the order books.

UK imports of fork-lift and works trucks reached around $1.6 billion in 2025 and have risen every year since 2022: $1.17 billion, then $1.39 billion in 2024, then $1.58 billion (UN Comtrade via WITS, 2025). Germany leads on 22.3%, ahead of France, Italy and the US, and China entered the top five origins for the first time in 2025 with 9.7%. After a weak 2025 for orders, the UKMHA forecasts forklift orders up 9.4% in 2026 and a further 6.5% in 2027 (UKMHA, 19 Nov 2025). The trucks keep coming. The question is whose badge is on them.

Channel truth

How do forklift brands usually enter the UK?

Through one exclusive national distributor: that is the norm in UK material handling. A single partner takes the brand, the stock and the customer relationships. The bespoke arrangements behind recent Chinese brand successes took years to build, and that queue is exactly what Trade Access Partners lets a manufacturer skip.

Look at the order forecast above: recovery through 2026 and 2027. Spend years courting the right exclusive partner and you negotiate through the upswing instead of selling into it. And exclusivity has a price beyond time: one partner holds your stock, your pricing and every customer relationship you hoped to own.

The Trade Access Partners alternative is an operating base: warehousing, assembly and PDI, distribution and representation from one site, with dealers appointed where you want them and national accounts kept in your name. If what you actually need is your own forklift import operation in the UK, trucks landed, prepared and delivered under your own brand, that is the shape we built. The routes sit side by side in our UK market-entry guide, costs and exits included.

The small print

Compliance notes for material handling equipment

A truck is a machine, an electrical product and lifting equipment all at once, and each identity brings obligations. The essentials, with sources.

Machinery basics

CE marking remains accepted in Great Britain indefinitely alongside UKCA (GOV.UK, updated 7 Apr 2026), and every machine needs a Declaration of Conformity and technical file under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 (GOV.UK guidance, updated 24 Mar 2025). Engine-powered trucks sit under GB Stage V emission rules for non-road mobile machinery, with approvals through the VCA (SI 2018/764).

Electric trucks: WEEE and batteries

An importer placing electrical equipment on the UK market takes on producer obligations: registration, and membership of a compliance scheme at five tonnes or more a year (GOV.UK, updated 12 Aug 2025). Importers of industrial batteries carry producer obligations too, including free take-back of waste batteries (GOV.UK battery regulations). Decide early who the importer will be, because these duties follow that role.

Lifting equipment in service

Once trucks are working, they need thorough examination by a competent person: every 6 months for lifting accessories and equipment that lifts people, every 12 months otherwise, or to an examination scheme (HSE). Buyers take that regime seriously, and they judge new brands on whether the parts and support behind them can keep pace with it.

Factual guidance, not legal advice: confirm the detail for your trucks with your advisers.

The launch plan

How Trade Access Partners launches a material handling brand

Five moves from first container to working fleet. The full model, with who does what, is on our how it works page.

Assess the fit

Your range against UK demand, with the compliance snapshot done properly: an electric truck and an engine truck trigger different obligations, and the mix shapes your plan. You get a written assessment and a dated plan, not a pitch.

Land the first trucks

Trucks unloaded, checked in and stored securely at our base. Before anything sails, our first-shipment checklist settles EORI, VAT and who acts as importer of record.

Build the demonstration fleet

Assembly and pre-delivery inspection in our workshop, so demonstration trucks are ready for dealer visits and customer trials from day one. What assembly and PDI each cover is set out on our services page.

Draw the dealer map

Instead of one exclusive national distributor, appoint regional dealers where the coverage matters and keep national accounts yourself. Our representation does the legwork, and the customer relationships stay on your books.

Back every truck

Parts on the shelf, warranty handled properly and after-sales that respects the thorough-examination calendar your customers work to. In material handling, the second truck is sold by how the first one was supported.

Other brands queued years for the right distributor. Your UK base can be working while the queue stands still.

The calendar

The shows that matter for material handling

Material handling gives you one date every year and one big stage every few years. Use the first to build and the second to arrive.

  • IntraLogisteX, the NEC, every March. The annual slot: a fixed point to launch against, then return to with more dealers behind you each year.
  • IMHX, the NEC, next in September 2027. The sector's big stage. Arrive with a working dealer network and reference trucks in the field, not a brochure and a promise.

Time it right and the forecast order recovery becomes your runway into IMHX. Our in-house studio handles the stand graphics, truck photography and launch campaign when you get there.

Questions

Questions material handling exporters ask us

Do we need an exclusive UK distributor for our forklift range?

No. Exclusive national distribution is the norm in UK material handling, but it is a convention, not a rule. An operating base gives you warehousing, assembly, PDI, distribution and representation without handing one partner your brand and your customers, and without the years it can take to secure the right exclusive arrangement.

What obligations come with importing electric forklifts into the UK?

Importers placing electrical equipment on the UK market take on producer obligations, including registration and membership of a compliance scheme at five tonnes or more a year, and importers of industrial batteries carry obligations including free take-back. The duties sit with the importer, so agree early who that will be and confirm the detail with your advisers.

Who handles PDI and after-sales for our trucks?

We do the preparation: every truck is assembled and inspected in our workshop before it reaches a dealer or a customer. After the sale, parts and warranty support run from the same base. Thorough examinations in service are carried out by a competent person under HSE rules, and nearby parts and support keep that regime simple for every customer.
